ATI's niobium process yields metal of the highest purity on the market today, serving the full range of applications: aerospace superalloys, sodium vapor lamps, superconductor materials, beams and girders in buildings and offshore drilling towers, special industrial machinery, oil and gas pipelines, railroad equipment, and automobiles.

Niobium-titanium is well suited for applications involved with superconductivity. ATI's Huntsville, Alabama site was designed specifically for that purpose. Its principal products include niobium-titanium alloy rod and niobium-titanium rivet-grade wire used in the aerospace industry. Protective surfaces on all machinery and handling equipment enable the Huntsville plant to maintain high yields and unparalleled metallurgical and surface qualities.


Hafnium is a heavy, steel-gray metal closely related to zirconium. General applications include nuclear reactor control rods, neutron absorption, alloy additive in various superalloys, and plasma torch welding tips.

Hafnium is available from ATI in common mill forms including plate, sheet, foil, rod, and wire. Hafnium metal is also available in a number of forms for alloying. For higher purity applications, crystal bar is available in chunk form (chopped bars), whole bars, or milled chips. Hafnium RodHafnium sponge is also available for standard alloying needs. ATI also produces hafnium powder, available in standard mesh sizes ranging from 80 – 325 mesh x down.

Hafnium is available in a number of different grades. Mill products conform to ASTM B776. Hafnium used for alloy addition comes in four different grades that depend on zirconium content.


Tantalum is a hard, ductile, acid-resistant, highly conductive (of heat and electricity) metal with a density of 16.65 g/cm3. It has a high Tube, Sheet, Rod, Pipe, Wiremelting point 3017°C (5463°F). It is often used as an alloy additive and is frequently combined with niobium to increase niobium's corrosion resistance properties.

When mixed with alloys such as niobium, it has excellent resistance to a wide variety of corrosive environments. These environments include mineral acids, most organic acids, liquid metals, most salts and liquid metals.

Tantalum is used for products in the aerospace, chemical processing, medical, defense, superconducting, electronics and other markets. ATI produces tantalum (Ta alloys) in billet, rod, tube, strip and precision machined components.


Vanadium is a soft, ductile, conductive, corrosion-resistant metal with a low density of 6.0 g/cm3. It has a melting point of 1910°C (3470°F). Vanadium is known for its high-strength at elevated temperatures, low-temperature, ductility, low rate of neutron embrittlement and superconductivity. It is often used as an alloy additive.

When mixed with alloys such as steel, vanadium lowers the ductile to brittle transition temperature and increases the toughness creating a high-strength low-alloy steel.

Vanadium is used for products in the automotive, oil & gas, nuclear energy, medical and electronics industries. ATI produces it in bar, billet, chips/turnings, plate, sheet strip, rod, tube and wire forms.
